Role Overview
As a Laboratory Systems Automation Engineer, reporting to the CTO, you will be responsible for designing, developing, and optimizing the automated systems used in our laboratories in space. Your work will play a crucial role in enabling the success of ALATYR’s biotech research and manufacturing facilities in space. You will collaborate closely with the space systems engineering and scientific teams to develop robust, scalable, and efficient systems that meet the demands of space-based research and bioproduction. This role requires hands-on prototyping skills, an innovative mindset, and a strong interest in robotics and biology.
Key Responsibilities
System Development: Design and develop automated laboratory systems for research and bioproduction platforms in space applications.
Prototyping & Manufacturing: Lead the prototyping and iterative development of systems, from concept to prototyping and manufacturing, for in-orbit deployment.
Microfluidics & Sensors: Contribute to the development and integration of microfluidic systems, optics, and electrochemical sensors for enhanced performance and reliability.
Hands-on Engineering: Collaborate with engineering teams to solve technical challenges and design innovative solutions for microgravity environments.
Innovation: Continuously explore and integrate state-of-the-art technologies to optimize laboratory automation systems.
Cross-functional Collaboration: Work closely with biologists and space engineers to ensure seamless integration of automation systems with ALATYR’s programs.
Qualifications
Education: Master’s degree in Engineering, ideally complemented by training in life sciences.
Experience: 3 to 5 years of experience in developing and implementing automated systems for laboratory applications, especially for biological research and bioproduction, with respect to GLP & GMP standards.
Skills:
- Expertise in automation, electronics, microfluidics, optics, and electrochemical sensors.
- Hands-on approach to prototyping and testing complex systems.
- Strong organizational and problem-solving skills, with a creative and resourceful mindset.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively in a multidisciplinary and international environment (fluent English).
- Enthusiastic about robotics, biology, and space exploration, with a passion for innovation.
